Matrices: wastewater, drinking water, soil, sludge, and other matrices for chemical contaminants.
This work is mostly performed for environmental compliance under regulations, usually federal, and enforced by the TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality).
Environmental testing is performed in three departments: Organics, Metals and Wet chemistry.

Under Environmental, we can perform the following laboratory testing:
Fenceline Monitoring, EPA Method 325B, is performed at A&B Labs.
Air testing, individual badges or Indoor Air Quality of a building and exposure monitoring of workers for solvents, metals and asbestos.
There are federal, usually Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), regulations on how much a worker can be exposed to contaminations during an eight hour period. Almost all chemical plants and refineries measure exposure of their employees. Certification by AIHA-LAP is almost a must for doing this test. Sampling media used by A&B Labs include cassettes, tubes, impingers, badges, and Tedlar bags.
Crystalline Silica by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is also performed at A&B Labs.
A&B Labs will provide routine sample media kits that include PVC filters, MCE filters, sorbent tubes, pumps and other related equipment. Our experience in Industrial Hygiene testing allows us to offer competitive turnaround times for the convenience of our clients.
Environmental – wastewater and drinking water. These include Legionella, HPC (Heterotrophic Plate Count or total bacteria), Coliform bacteria, Streptococcus bacteria, and other bacteria.
Food – These include various types of bacteria (Listeria, E. coli O157, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio) in meat, fat, processed foods, and other food products.
We recently introduced, Dr. Wagner’s Shelf Life Analysis which includes testing of the following: aerobic plate count, lactic acid bacteria, yeast and mold.
At A&B Labs, we are proud of our extensive microbiology services. Our advanced technology and equipment allows us to test for presence, absence or numbers of microbial organisms. Because we understand the importance of microbiology testing and the negative effect the presence of microbes can have, we are flexible with our clients in order to comply with their specific needs.
Mold can be detected in environmental samples such as walls and surfaces, air cassettes, and culture plates from an air sampler. We have two state-certified Mold Assessment Consultants on staff and are a state-certified Mold Analysis Laboratory.
A&B Labs perform bulk asbestos testing of building materials, ceiling tiles, and other asbestos containing substances. A&B Labs is a state-certified Asbestos Lab for PLM & PCM analyses and a state-certified Asbestos Consulting Agency.

EXPANDS CAPACITY FOR MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSES
A&B Environmental Services, Inc. dba A&B Labs is expanding their microbiological analytical services to aid in verifying the effectiveness of surface cleaning.
Proper cleaning of surfaces and the application of approved biocides is critical to helping prevent the transmission and spread of Coronaviruses. Testing of selected surfaces following cleaning and application of EPA approved biocides can be done to verify the effectiveness of the cleaning procedures.
At this time there is no clear indictor to determine the presence of active viruses on surfaces, however testing for live, viable bacteria is being used as a surrogate. If the application and cleaning with biocides to the surfaces has eliminated the live bacteria then it is presumed that any viruses on the same surfaces have also been eliminated. The caveat is that the biocides used are approved by the EPA as effective against both bacteria and Coronaviruses.
After cleaning and application of an approved biocide, select surfaces can be sampled by qualified personnel for the presence of viable bacteria. The surfaces should include primarily frequent touch points since these surfaces are most likely to have bacteria and viruses. These commonly include, but are not limited to, door knobs, locks, door push bars, door edges and jams on the side opposite the hinges, stair and ramp handrails, countertops, cupboard handles, drawer pulls, appliance handles, light switches, toilet seats and flush handles, faucet handles, soap pumps, table and desktops, telephones, computer keyboards, touch screen monitors and mouse, elevator buttons, credit card keypads, vending machine buttons, equipment controls, chair armrests and gas pump handles.
Sterile sampling media, primarily swabs and sponges, are used to wipe surfaces to collect bacteria. Swabs are preferred for small areas such as keyboards, door handles and drawer pulls while sponges are better for larger areas such as desk, tables, countertops, and chair arms. For sponges, the area tested should be about 1 square foot.
After sampling, the media is returned to the sterile container which is provided in the sample kit and labeled with a unique ID number for transport to the lab. There is a 48 hour maximum holding time between the time of the sample collection and when it must be placed into cultures in the lab.
Reporting and Turnaround Time
Cultures will be analyzed for Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC). This is an analysis for a wide range of viable bacteria. The culture time is 48 hours. The report will be issued with results in Colony Forming Units per Swab (or Sponge). Reports will be issued in 2 working days from receipt of the samples by the lab.
